Planet Omega
OMEGA has been timing bobsleigh events at the Olympic Games since the 1930s and the brand’s passion for fast-paced thrills continues to gain pace. In 2002, we began a partnership with the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) and just a few years later helped establish an exciting new winter sport called Monobob.

Among the most spectacular winter sports, bobsleigh is distinguished by adrenaline-charged racing and exhilarating team spirit. The sport originated in our home country and as a proud Swiss brand, we’re thrilled to time every split second at the Olympic Games and at all ISBF events.
Speed is crucial in bobsleigh racing throughout the run. A hundredth of a second advantage at the start of the race can translate into three- hundredths of a second by the finish line. OMEGA times the fraction of a second that separates the winners from the rest of the field.
OMEGA’S INFRARED PHOTOCELLS AND TIMING DEVICES
Our timekeepers position pairs of red and infrared light barriers along the runs. These photoelectric barriers and high-precision timing devices are used to measure the start, split and finish times, as well as the maximum speeds reached by the participants on their way to the finish line.
THE OMEGA MEASUREMENT UNIT
With its three sensors, the OMEGA Measurement Unit makes important in-run data – including speed, g-force and angular velocity – available to competitors and their teams as well as to TV viewers throughout the run.
In 2011, OMEGA took an active role in the development of Monobob, a dynamic winter sport ideal for newcomers to competitive winter sports. We have worked closely with Swiss Sliding and have assumed the title sponsorship of the OMEGA Monobob series.
MONOBOB FACTS
DISCOVER WHAT MAKES THE MONOBOB SPORT SO SPECIAL
With a small, sleek sleigh and a single rider, Monobob is a unique winter sport.
BLAZING DOWN THE RUN AT INCREDIBLE SPEEDS
The Monobob sleighs can reach speeds of up to 120 km per hour.
ENDURING IMPRESSIVELY STRONG GRAVITATIONAL FORCES
During the run, the rider will experience gravitational forces of three to four Gs.
PERFECTLY SIZED FOR A LONE WINTER ATHLETE
The Monobob sleighs are around 2.30 metres in length and weigh around 130 kg.
“The introduction of Monobob allows a whole bunch of new athletes to make first steps in this sport and the fun part will probably be more in the centre than the latest scientific developments.”
