When astronaut Wally Schirra wore his personal OMEGA CK2998 into orbit aboard a Mercury mission on October 3, 1962, the timepiece became the first OMEGA in space. Today, OMEGA has celebrated this historic event by recreating the model using 21st century technology.
Staying true to its illustrious ancestor, the chronograph reprises the OMEGA's calibre 1861, a descendent of the famous manual‑winding movement that was worn on the moon. Available in the Speedmaster Anniversary series, the 39.7 mm dress watch is available in two editions. An original model that features the same black dial, black bezel and stainless steel case with symmetrical lugs found on the 1962 Speedmaster. As a further tribute to the original timepiece, both Baton and Alpha style hands are used. The collection also features a Solid Gold edition that includes an opaline silvery dial adorned with a brown polished ceramic bezel ring and a matt chromium nitride tachymeter scale. The case, indexes, subdials and OMEGA logo are all made of 18K Sedna™ gold while the central chronograph hand is also gold‑plated.
A classic brown leather strap completes the vintage look of both models. The caseback is embossed with the original Seahorse medallion, along with the words "THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE", "OCTOBER 3, 1962". With its extreme focus on heritage and preserving the purity of its design, the pedigree of these watches remains unrivalled.
