The First OMEGA in Space: timeless design, reimagined for a new era.
October 3, 1962
The Speedmaster became the first OMEGA in space during Astronaut Walter Schirra’s groundbreaking Sigma 7 mission in 1962. This pivotal 9-hour, 13-minute, and 11-second flight saw Schirra orbit Earth six times, establishing the Speedmaster as an essential piece of space kit. NASA’s subsequent certification for all manned missions cemented OMEGA’s place in aerospace history. Today's watch is based on the original CK-2998 model.

2024
More than 60 years after Schirra’s historic mission, OMEGA honours this legacy with a special re-edition of the Speedmaster.
DOMED SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL
A sapphire crystal with a Hesalite-like domed form sits in a 39.70 mm case made from polished and brushed stainless steel, recreating the charm of the original 1962 model. The Hesalite-like finish blends vintage aesthetics with modern durability.
VINTAGE GLOW
Indexes and Alpha-style hour and minute hands are filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, replicating the original’s luminescence. The small second in a new Alpha-style hand allows for easy reading. The sun-brushed grey-blue dial, paired with a vintage OMEGA logo sit under a Hesalite-inspired domed sapphire crystal.
MISSION-READY BRACELET
The First OMEGA in Space is presented on a new polished and brushed steel bracelet with tapered flat links, featuring OMEGA’s comfort release adjustment system. Or choose brown leather straps, that echoes the original.
COMMEMORATIVE CASEBACK
Polished stainless steel, engraved 'THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE' and the mission date 'OCTOBER 3, 1962' encircling a Seahorse motif. Water-resistant to 50m/165ft. Commemorating OMEGA's space legacy.
OMEGA’s new sapphire crystal replicates the classic domed shape of Hesalite, seen on the first 1962 Speedmaster.
Powered by a manual-winding chronograph movement with Co-Axial escapement, the Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space is certified as a Master Chronometer. Approved by METAS, it resists magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, with a free-sprung balance and silicon balance spring. Rhodium-plated finishes and straight Geneva waves elevate its precision.
Space-legacy meets modern day materials. Find your favourite style in our latest selection of First OMEGA in Space timepieces.
