Loved on Earth and beyond, the Speedmaster Moonwatch remains a true icon in the world of watchmaking. For its most recent update, the legendary chronograph has been inspired by its own historical design, while the Master Chronometer certification provides even more reliability and excellence.

An enduring Icon

NASA astronauts have worn and trusted the Moonwatch during every moon landing in history, including Apollo 11 in 1969. Today’s modern update is crafted in that same 4th generation style that famously flew beyond Earth. Its iconic design includes all the signature details, including an asymmetrical 42 mm case in stainless steel.

STEP DIAL

As well as featuring its three subdials, the black step dial includes domed minute and seconds chronograph hands, as well as an adjusted minute track for the new movement’s frequency.

DOT OVER NINETY

Especially for Speedmaster aficionados and fans of historical detail, the famous dot over 90 (DON) and a dot diagonal to 70 are included on the anodised aluminium bezel ring.

THE CLASP

Along with a comfort adjustment setting, the bracelet clasp features a polished OMEGA logo on the satin-finished cover. Beautifully refined with a width of 15mm, it also includes two polished pushers in an oval shape.

THE CREW OF FOUR

There are four eye-catching models in steel that make up the Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer collection. The hesalite glass models can be chosen on a nylon fabric strap, or a fully-brushed stainless steel bracelet. The sapphire crystal models can be selected on a leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet with polished and brushed links.

The story of the Moonwatch is like no other timepiece. Since launching into space in 1965, it has continued to demonstrate OMEGA’s passion for limitless exploration.

Only 12 people have ever walked on the Moon. All of them were equipped with the OMEGA Speedmaster. This not only proves the reliability of the timepiece, but also its reputation for boundless excellence.
Along with NASA, many other international space agencies have adopted the Moonwatch for their crews, allowing it to become an essential piece of kit during some of humankind’s greatest adventures.

THE NASA TESTS

When NASA first went in search of a watch for its manned missions, only the Speedmaster survived the punishing tests. As a result, it was declared “Flight Qualified” in 1965 and flew into space just three weeks later on Gemini 3.

As humans have explored new frontiers beyond Earth, the Speedmaster has been there to time every historic hour.

The watch was a critical back-up, in case the digital timers ever failed on board.

FIRST SPACEWALK

Edward White became the first American to walk in space during the Gemini 4 mission in 1965. Attached to his wrist was the OMEGA Speedmaster, newly qualified by NASA.

During NASA’s tests, the Speedmaster had proven itself trustworthy in the most hostile environments. Examinations ranged from shock and vibration, through to extreme temperatures and vacuum.

MOON LANDING

The Moonwatch earned its name in July, 1969, when humankind stepped onto the lunar surface for the first time. Famously photographed on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin, this was the first of six moon landings that the Speedmaster has ever made.

When man first walked on the moon

The Apollo 11 Saturn V space vehicle was launched into space on the 16th of July, 1969, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The three astronauts were each officially equipped with an OMEGA Speedmaster, including Lunar Module Pilot, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.

LANDING AT TRANQUILITY BASE

The first astronaut stepped onto the moon at 02:56:15 UTC. He described the lunar surface as “very fine-grained” and “almost like a powder,” just before delivering his famous “giant leap” quote.

“THAT’S ONE SMALL STEP FOR A MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND.”

At 03:15:16 UTC, Buzz Aldrin made his way onto the surface. He described the view as “magnificent desolation” and even enjoyed some two-footed kangaroo hops in the low-gravity environment. In total, the first moonwalk lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes.
